Geopolitical Risk Analysis

A selection of reports exploring how geopolitics, macroeconomics and financial markets interact under uncertainty

I proactively created the opportunity to join the University of Cambridge Geopolitical Risk Analysis Study group, enhancing the existing expertise from my degree in Politics and International Relations. Combined with independent research, this experience was a practical way to sharpen my abilities in evaluating the interplay between geopolitical developments, macroeconomic shifts and investment implications.

Problem

In an increasingly unpredictable world, geopolitical risk is no longer peripheral to investment analysis – it is fundamental to it. Many key market risks originate outside financial markets, and understanding them in a nuanced way requires more than commentary. It demands structured analysis that translates uncertainty into clear judgement.

Objective

To develop a portfolio of original written analysis that synthesises mixed geopolitical, macro and financial market signals into clear decision-supporting insights.

Approach

Conducted independent research for each report covering how geopolitical developments translate into macroeconomic consequences, and how those consequences shape the investment environment.

Produced reports based on this research, including country risk assessment, event analysis and forecasting.

  • Training and methodology: began with training in writing reports on recent geopolitical developments in the style of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Events Insights, followed by analysis of geopolitical and macro country risk using Dun & Bradstreet’s risk indicators

  • Framework development: built on this by developing my own framework for scenario-based investment risk reports, assessing how geopolitical and macroeconomic dynamics shape investment judgement

The emphasis is on interpretation and evaluation rather than description: identifying what is changing, why it matters, and the potential second-order effects. The investment implications are assessed in terms of probability and severity.

Result

A portfolio of reports analysing how geopolitical developments shape macroeconomic conditions, markets, and investment implications.
